How To Choose Attention-Grabbing Term Paper Topics
If you are tasked with writing a term paper, you can employ many basic tactics to select an attention-grabbing topic. Of course, you must make sure you have a topic which can sustain your interest for the duration of the project, and one which you can make fit the full page or word count. If you need to fill ten pages, then debating whether school uniforms improve just academic performance might be too limiting, but debating how clothing affects development might be too large. These are things you must take into consideration.
If you are tasked with essay writing, there are some things that you can do to make sure you have an easier time selecting your topic:
- The first thing you should do when selecting a topic is to review the assignment details. Make sure you look for key phrases like “compare or contrast” versus “compare and contrast”. Pay attention to things like “between 1800 and 1850” or “after 1850”. These are all important indicators that will refine the subject you are covering. If no such indicators exist, you can still apply some of your own in order to more refine your topic and make it a manageable topic on which to write.
- Try and find things that relate to your personal life. For example, if you have visited another country, and you learned a lot about their architecture, you might be able to use that to devise a good topic. If you instead want to visit a certain country because of their architecture but have not yet, then you can use your essay as an opportunity to learn more about the systems and the architecture in preparation for your potential visit in the future.
- Brainstorm different subjects that you have written about in the past, or what arguments you like to make with those you love. Think about the topics that interest you and how you might be able to link them to other topics that you know a lot about.
- Think about things you have read or seen recently. Perhaps you watched a documentary on ancient Egypt and you have an interest in politics. You can turn this into a topic that focuses on ancient Egyptian politics and how Roman leaders were able to mesh the two religions of Egypt and of their home country in an effort to led the Egyptian people.
